The Hospital Manager, in coordination with VP of Animal and Environmental Health, will oversee all aspects of the hospital, manage the daily operations and assist in the daily medical care of both resident and rehabilitating animals. This position works closely with Zoological Care to ensure highest standard of medical care.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Oversee daily medical care of resident and rehabilitating animals- including but not limited to medication dispensing/administration, sample scheduling and collection, sample processing, diagnostic and medical procedures
Participate in the rapid response to all resident and stranded animal events including those that occur during non-scheduled times of work or outside of CMA’s operating hours
Manage veterinary technicians including goal setting, performance appraisals and schedules
Oversee maintenance of all hospital areas, servicing of associated medical equipment, and procedures
Perform all duties related to purchasing of pharmaceuticals, hospital and laboratory supplies, and disposing of expired drugs and supplies
Assist with development and management of animal health annual budget, maintaining accurate and current records for accounting
Maintain biohazardous waste and sharps disposal program
Maintenance of aquarium oxygen supply
Assists veterinarian with medical record keeping and appointment scheduling.
Assist with euthanasia and post-mortem examinations
Collaborate with animal care staff in training husbandry behaviors to ensure behavior meets medical needs and participate in training when appropriate
Function as veterinary technician as needed
Establish and implement standard operating procedures, ensuring an efficient overall hospital operation
Regularly re-evaluating medical processes and protocols incorporating newest techniques and innovation to ensure highest medical standard
Coordinate with other departments to promote open communication and achieve CMA’s goals
Participate in some or all aspects of the various types of research projects as deemed appropriate
Adhere to all OSHA, USDA, DEA and FWC regulations and make recommendations for work orders to ensure compliance in all areas
Participate in various PR and media events including professional interviews as deemed necessary or appropriate by the Veterinarian
Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
Position requires a bachelor’s degree or higher. Veterinary technician degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program (CVT/LVT) preferred
Minimum of 7 years proven experience in veterinary field including, minimum 5 years of veterinary aquatic experience and minimum of 3 years of managerial experience directly supervising staff
Ability to be certified in the state of Florida
Ability to obtain Florida driver’s license
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and/or holidays as needed; must also be able to share a 24/7 on-call schedule in case of emergency situations
Thorough understanding of medical equipment, including but not limited to anesthetic machine, anesthesia monitoring, in-house lab equipment, and radiology equipment
Knowledge of medical procedures in aquatic animals
Demonstrates broad understanding of the field of aquatic animal health, including common diseases and treatments, general husbandry, environmental quality, zoonotic diseases, and conservation issues.
Ability to perform field response for stranded marine mammals
Must be able to provide first-response and emergency first-aid patient care in absence of Veterinarian
Demonstration of mathematical competence and ability to manage a budget
Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally and follow complex instructions
Ability to take initiative and work independently in the absence of supervision
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, word, power point etc).
Familiarity with Tracks electronic records is beneficial
